YTTC: yoga therapy and training centre

Yoga Therapy & Training Centre (YTTC)

YTTC Yoga for Pregnancy Diploma Course
…….from micro movements to the free flow with Nicole Henkel-Murphy

The fundamental aims of yoga are increasing flexibility and mobility while decreasing tension and stress. These are perfectly compatible with the needs of mothers-to-be and their babies. Learn how to make your class suitable for pregnant students with specially chosen asanas and modifications. Learn essential birth-breathing and relaxation techniques. Guidance on how to prepare the mum-to-be during pregnancy, labour and birth giving with yoga movements.

Pregnancy and yoga are a good match! Why? Many of us agree that 'yoga is a complete approach to life' and if you ask any pregnant woman, a mother or a father they will tell you the same: having a baby is a complete new approach to life or at least it will change the approach to life. Pregnancy is a time of transition, new sensations, new experiences and new limits too - you can say the same about a general yoga practice.
The beauty of the adaptability of yoga will be our guide during this training and the importance that pregnancy is not a 'condition' but a transformation - a different state of the female body and that the right yoga practice is not only very beneficial for the body and mind but a possibility to find a safe support system for this transformation.

Pranayama Yoga

Prana breath, in Sanskrit the word means life-force. Pranayama (the act of taking in Prana) teaches that during the retention portion of the breath cycle, one should consciously retain the Prana, then release the carbon dioxide (and other gases) from the lungs during exhalation, storing the prana in the Manipura, or 3rd Chakra.

At the studio we explore many breathing techniques to help improve lung capacity and reach a state of calming the mind.

Yoga for Babies

A fun mix of movement, songs, massage and relaxation to delight the babies and increase parental confidence in baby handling and promote baby bonding.

Integrated practices for mums/carers and babies from 4 weeks to crawling. Gentle movements to encourage babies to stretch and relax. Adapted yoga potures helping babies to strengthen their spines and develop supple joints. These practices also help babies to establish good sleep and feeding patterns.

Baby yoga classes on Monday mornings, 11am to 12.30pm. For more information, contact Gill at 07879 810630.

Yoga for Pregnancy

Gill Henderson focuses on a holistic approach to pregnancy and giving birth using yoga and breathing methods to tone, make space and relax. The classes are fun and friendly and and suitable for mums from 14 to 40 weeks. (Please let your medical practitioner know that you will be attending).

Astanga Yoga

This method of Yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures – a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscle and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

Iyengar Yoga

Classes are based on the teachings of Yogacharya BKS Iyengar (Guruji) a living legend who has taught yoga in a unique way to all his students. Precision and beauty mark the asana and the regular practice integrates the body, mind and emotions.

Gill is a YTTC and Birthlight yoga teacher.
She specialises in Perinatal Yoga and has been trained by Dr Francoise Freedman (founder of Birthlight in London).

Gill teaches Yoga for Pregnancy and Yoga for Postnatal Recovery, for mums and babies. The classes are fun and friendly, as well as a support network for mums and mums to be.

Jane Louise Kelly is a qualified YTTC instructor who has since set up `Yogabuddies` and has been working with children, parents and teachers in schools and the Marie Quail Yoga Studio. Her yoga classes are woven through with stories, songs and rhymes and more often than not a little French, which she speaks fluently. In July 2005 Jane-Louise will be following an intensive course of training in London with Sonia Sumar of Brazil, who following the birth of her daughter in 1972 with Down Syndrome, has dedicated her life to the teaching of yoga to children with special needs.
Michael Magennis is a YTTC trained tutor who has specialised in teaching ashtanga yoga. Recently returned from further training in California Michael combines the five core elements of body alignment into his study.

Paddy began his training with Marie Quail in 1995 and continued on with Elizabeth Connolly. He now holds qualifications in both YTTC and Iyengar yoga systems. He continues to attend workshops & training to further his knowledge of the subject. His classes will help build strength, stamina and flexibility as well as developing body awareness. Asanas teach poise, balance & strength and are practiced to improve the body's physical health and to clear the mind.

This method of Yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures – a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscle and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa can be described as yoga classes that emphasize flowing movements. In vinyasa flow we synchronize the breath with flowing sequence of postures and use transitional vinyasa sequences between sustained postures as well.

Vinyasa flow includes components from ashtanga yoga such as sun salutations, bandhas, drishti (gaze) and ujjayi pranayama which is a continuous rhythmic breath that builds heat and provides a mantra of ocean sound to enhance the fluid nature of the practice.

Yoga practices, incorporating ujjayi breath are often referred as moving meditations, because the continuous awareness of the breath helps develop focus and concentration and draws us deeper into our internal sensations.

In vinyasa flow yoga there are no predetermined asana sequences. Classes are composed in ways that connect poses with breath-synchronized movements. Inhalations are linked to upward movements and motions intended to expand the front of the body and create lightness.

Exhalations are tied to movements that either compress the belly, as in forward bends and twists, or ground and stabilize us with downward flowing energy. The purpose of linking the breath with movement (vinyasa) is internal cleansing. Vinyasa generates the subtle, internal heat of transformation and stokes agni fire. Agni is the digestive fire used not only to digest physical food but also experiences and sensations. If our fire is strong, we can better adapt to life’s challenges. Asanas, vinyasa and pranayama are creatively sequenced to develop internal awareness, build heat and explore energizing effects.

Yoga for Surfers

The fundamental elements of yoga- increasing flexibility, mobility, balance and strength are a perfect for surfers. The breathing techniques will improve your lung capacity and help you keep focus while on your board.

Yoga before and after surfing will not only help ease pain and aches but also will help the body to regenerate faster and recover from injures or exhaustion.

With the strong flowing elements of Vinyasa Yoga you will discover a new way of preparing and exercising for your next surfing session.

After birth it is very important to support the realignment of the spine and the muscles of the pelvic area. Motherhood at the beginning can be quite a challenge, so yoga breathing and mindfulness during the practise will nurture the Mum and their Babies.

Mum and Baby yoga is a chance for the mum to get back in shape quicker and to meet other mum’s with their babies.

Geraldine studied her Yoga Teacher Training with the Cork Contemporary School of Yoga. She is also a qualified Massage Therapist, Baby Massage Instructor, Reiki practitioner and Pregnancy Yoga teacher.

Her Hatha yoga classes are very suitable for beginners. They are focussed on bringing awareness into the body. Yoga postures are practiced with awareness and attention to the breath. Pranayama (breath work) is also practiced. Each class is completed with Yoga Nidra (relaxation) practice. Information is also provided on the different Chakras in the body

Classes are suitable for all ages.

First and foremost, yoga for me is about relaxation.
In today’s world there are enough stresses and pressures, and so I would like my class to be a space where these can be left behind for a while.

My focus in Yoga is on working with the asanas (postures), integrated with an awareness of the breath (pranayama), while always maintaining an appreciation of our own bodies and energy at any moment in time.

Yoga for me is not about pushing our bodies into a pre-defined perfect pose, but instead tuning into our own limits and only going as far as them each time. My main aim is for my students to leave the class feeling relaxed, yet energised.”

Baby massage is an ancient art. It is relaxing for both the baby and the parent. It can promote better sleep patterns and enhance development. Baby Massage will help to boost circulation and the immune system and can provide relief from colic and wind, constipation and teething pains. It enhances the infant-parent attachment and gives parents a deeper awareness and understanding of their baby. Baby Massage is enjoyable and gives parents a chance to meet other parents and exchange ideas and experiences.

Classes are weekly and the course lasts five weeks. Fee €100
Course begin: April 4th, Fridays at 2pm at the Cork Movement Centre

Kathryn Moynihan discovered yoga seven years practicing in Ashtanga first and then moving eventually to a Vinyasa style yoga practice. Having had to deal with neck & back problems from a graphic design job, she instantly fell in love with the therapeutic results of the dynamic practice but also the solid grounding foundation it gave her spiritually. She finished her training last year with the vinyasa flow training course set up by David Curtis Kathryn will be going onto assist Dave in the Cork Yoga Teacher training course that will be held in March 2008. Having found a solid foundation in her yoga practice, she has gone on to do various workshops in Ireland including; Nancy gilgoff workshop; planning to take a somatic course (Hanna Somatic Education & somatic yoga) in late autumn of 2008, hoping to visit India to practice some more in 2008/2009. Kathryn’s love for yoga also extends to creating a happy & safe environment for students to practice and to be challenged. Kathryn approaches her yoga classes in a lighthearted but focused manner, steering her students toward a focused, dedicated and balanced experience to assist them in gaining clarity and peace of mind.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga
Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is a traditional Hatha yoga system where the emphasis is on the dynamic movement from one ‘asana’ (posture) to the following one. Our classes are focusing on alignment and safety, creating an invigorating and flowing sequence following most of the traditional ‘asanas’ of the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition. We create balance, strength, flexibility and breath awareness, leading to a light heart and pure and focused mind.
