Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga classes mainly consist of asana, pranayama and relaxation techniques, however, the term Hatha Yoga covers many styles and traditions.

Popular schools of yoga include:

  • lyengar Yoga
  • Ashtanga Yoga
  • Shivananda Yoga
  • Kriplula Yoga
  • Bickram Yoga
  • Bihar Yoga

Ultimately, according to Patanjali, the author of the ancient Yoga Sutras, all of the systems lead to the same path, "enlightenment" (samadhi).

All schools of yoga use yoga postures (asanas), although they may place emphasis on different practices; for example, Ashtanga yoga incorporates the use of Ujjayi Pranayama (the victorious breath ) which energises and warms the body quite quickly; and Bandhas (internal locks), which help to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles: these two practices help to avoid injury. This type of yoga often appeals to the athletic or sporting type of personality as it is quite dynamic.

On the other hand, lyengar yoga places more emphasis on precision and alignment of the body during practice, and is suitable for all ages and abilities. This is because lyengar yoga teachers are taught how to use props and supports to enable the student to practise safely, and within their own limits (for example where there is a medical condition or injury), yet at the same time without placing limitations on themselves.

No one can say that any one yoga school is better than another- different methods suit different people, and it is important to find the right school of yoga for you, the student.

The marvellous thing about yoga is the richness in diversity, it can be practiced with little or no equipment other than a non-slip mat for safety and a teacher who has an in-depth knowledge of the philosophy of yoga, is open minded, positive, and can inspire you to do the work. Yoga, after all is said, is a discipline.

Why then choose Yoga above other forms of 'keep fit'? Yoga asanas stretch the body, compress the internal organ, opens up the area of the chest (aiding breathing ) and in turn helps to lift pressure off the heart area. The twists in particular aid digestion and processes of elimination. The relaxation and meditation techniques help to relieve stress enabling us to live a more fulfilling existence. The philosophy of yoga includes the practice of the yama and niyamas (how we relate to ourselves and others). Other methods of keeping fit aim only to strengthen the body and reduce stress.

If you have never given yoga a try why not do so now?
